The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Gorakhpur, has taken a major step toward expanding its academic and research portfolio by approving several new courses across super-speciality medicine, trauma care, nursing, and allied health sciences. The decision was announced after the institute’s eighth Standing Academic Committee (SAC) meeting, chaired by Executive Director Ashoka Jahnavi Prasad, on Monday.
The meeting marked a milestone in AIIMS Gorakhpur’s journey to strengthen advanced medical training, research capacity, and healthcare delivery in the region. The newly approved programmes not only broaden the scope of medical education but also address pressing national healthcare needs.
New DM and PDCC Courses Cleared
A key highlight of the SAC meeting was the approval of Doctorate of Medicine (DM) programmes in Neurology, Pain Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, and Critical Care Medicine. These will be offered under the Department of Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine and Critical Care, significantly boosting super-speciality education at the institute.
In addition, several Post-Doctoral Certificate Courses (PDCC) have been sanctioned in niche areas including Trauma Anaesthesia, Spine Trauma, Pelvic-Acetabular Surgery, and Adolescent Gynaecology. According to sources, some of these PDCC courses are among the first of their kind in India, establishing AIIMS Gorakhpur as a leader in cutting-edge medical training.
New PDF and Postgraduate Programmes
Further strengthening its academic offerings, the SAC approved a Post-Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) in Maternal-Foetal Medicine under the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Additionally, an MS in Trauma Surgery under the Department of Trauma and Emergency Medicine was cleared, reflecting the institute’s emphasis on emergency and trauma care.
AIIMS Gorakhpur also announced the launch of a PhD in Nursing, an MSc in Nursing Psychology, and a BSc in Operation Theatre Technology. These courses are designed to create skilled healthcare professionals who can contribute to specialised areas of clinical care, nursing research, and allied health sciences.
Focus on Mental Health and Student Support
During the meeting, Executive Director Ashoka Jahnavi Prasad raised concern over the rising number of student suicides across educational institutions in India. He stressed the urgent need for psychological support systems, preventive measures, and sustained mental health care within campuses.
He noted that the newly introduced MSc in Nursing Psychology would play a vital role in strengthening the mental health workforce, ensuring that psychological care is accessible not only for students but also for the wider community.
Strengthening Healthcare Education in India
The expansion of courses at AIIMS Gorakhpur is expected to bridge critical gaps in specialised medical education while simultaneously promoting research, innovation, and advanced patient care. From super-speciality DM programmes to nursing and allied health sciences, the new courses reflect a holistic approach toward healthcare education.
With these academic advancements, AIIMS Gorakhpur is positioning itself as a pioneering medical institute in India, committed to nurturing highly trained professionals who can address both clinical and societal healthcare challenges.
