In a significant step toward leveraging technology for public safety, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has granted a No Objection Certificate (NoC) for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data Analytics-based Road Safety Pilot Project proposed by the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department. This initiative marks India’s first state-led AI intervention in road safety, setting a precedent for other states to adopt data-driven governance models.
The primary objective of the project is to create an intelligent and responsive transport system capable of reducing road accidents, enhancing enforcement mechanisms, and improving real-time administrative decision-making. By utilizing AI and Big Data tools, the model aims to strengthen enforcement efficiency and develop a robust transport safety ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh.
About the Project:
The six-week pilot phase will be executed by ITI Limited, a central public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Communications, in partnership with mLogica, a California-based global technology firm. Their combined expertise will help develop an analytical framework to interpret transport-related data and generate actionable insights for traffic regulation, accident prevention, and operational improvements.
The project will focus on integrating data from a wide range of sources—such as vehicle registrations, driving records, accident locations, and enforcement actions—into a centralized AI-enabled platform. This will allow authorities to identify high-risk areas, predict accident hotspots, and allocate enforcement resources more efficiently.
Budget and Financials:
The Government of Uttar Pradesh has shown its commitment by allocating Rs 10 crore in the 2025–26 state budget for the development and deployment of this data-driven transport model. Importantly, the project will incur no financial liability for the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, making it a cost-effective model for innovation and public safety.
The approval from MoRTH is a strong endorsement of the project’s potential to transform road safety outcomes not just in Uttar Pradesh but across India. If successful, the pilot could become a template for nationwide adoption, reinforcing the role of digital governance in saving lives and building smarter, safer cities.
