India Secures 12 Medals, Finishes 20th at FISU World University Games 2025 in Germany

India concluded its campaign at the FISU World University Games 2025 in Germany with a total of 12 medals — 2 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze — securing the 20th position among participating nations. While the medal tally was lower than the country’s record-breaking performance at the 2023 edition in Chengdu, the 2025 Games further underscored India’s rising presence in global university sports.

The standout performances came from compound archery, where Sahil Rajesh Jadhav and Parneet Kaur led the charge with clinical precision and composure. Their gold medal victories were hailed as evidence of India’s growing dominance in the discipline, particularly among young university-level athletes.

In athletics, Indian athletes delivered consistent performances, contributing several medals to the overall tally. Although India missed out on gold in track and field events, strong finishes and personal bests signaled the emergence of promising talent poised for future international success.

One of the most historic moments of the Games was India clinching a bronze medal in badminton, marking a rare podium finish in the sport at the university level. This result reflects India’s deepening talent pool in badminton, which has already yielded global stars on the senior circuit.

Another milestone came in tennis, where Vaishnavi Adkar won a bronze medal, becoming the first Indian player since 1979 to medal in the sport at the FISU Games. Her performance not only broke a 46-year drought but also highlighted the revival of Indian tennis at the collegiate level.

Though India’s 12-medal haul was fewer than the 26 medals earned in Chengdu, the delegation’s performance in Germany has been widely praised for its competitiveness, diversity of sports, and the expanding depth in university athletics. Experts noted that India’s university sports ecosystem is steadily improving, aided by increased investments in training infrastructure, scholarships, and institutional support.
