Hockey India Marks 100th Anniversary with Major Financial Boost and Nationwide Festival

Celebrating a century of legacy, Hockey India (HI) has announced a sweeping set of initiatives to mark its 100th anniversary, including a substantial hike in financial grants aimed at strengthening grassroots and national-level competitions across the country. The move is seen as both a tribute to hockey’s storied past and a decisive investment in its future.

In a landmark decision, Hockey India has approved ₹70 lakh each for senior national championships, ₹30 lakh each for junior and sub-junior national events, and ₹25 lakh per state to support local hockey competitions. This significant funding increase is expected to boost infrastructure, training, and organizational capacity, particularly at the grassroots level, where nurturing young talent is key to long-term success.

As part of the centenary celebrations, Hockey India has also announced a nationwide hockey festival to be held on November 7, 2025. The event promises to be the largest single-day hockey celebration in Indian history, featuring 1,000 matches across various districts, involving over 36,000 players from all age groups and backgrounds.

HI President and former Olympian Dilip Tirkey described the initiative as a fitting tribute to the golden legacy of Indian hockey, which has seen the country win multiple Olympic gold medals and produce legendary players over the past century. “This is more than a celebration—it’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to build the future of Indian hockey,” he said. Tirkey emphasized that the financial grants and the mega festival are designed not just to honor the past, but to energize a new generation of players and fans.

The initiative has been widely welcomed by state hockey associations, players, and coaches, many of whom see this as a revitalization of the domestic hockey ecosystem. By focusing on both elite and local levels, the move bridges a long-standing gap in support and resources that has often hindered talent development outside major urban centers.
