The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), through its flagship publication Shaastra Magazine, has officially launched the National Internship, Placement Training, and Assessment (NIPTA) initiative. This pioneering programme aims to create a national benchmark for internship and job readiness among engineering and diploma students across India.
Launched by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the NIPTA initiative reflects IIT Madras’ commitment to empowering youth with industry-relevant skills and making employability measurable, transparent, and inclusive.
About the NIPTA Initiative
According to an official IIT Madras statement, the NIPTA programme is designed as a structured 10–12 week training and assessment initiative to prepare students for internships, placements, and professional roles. The programme integrates technical knowledge, mathematical aptitude, logical reasoning, and communication skills, offering a comprehensive skill development pathway for India’s future workforce.
Students will have access to free training resources, including video lectures, mock tests, and sample questions curated by academic experts. The training phase will be followed by a three-hour in-person, proctored assessment held at designated centres across India.
Who Can Apply for NIPTA?
The NIPTA 2025–26 assessment is open to:
- Third and final-year engineering students
- Recent engineering graduates
- Final-year diploma students and diploma holders
While the training resources will remain completely free, students will be required to pay a nominal examination fee to participate in the final assessment.
Upon completion, every participant will receive a performance-based certificate issued by IIT Madras, which will act as an objective indicator of skills and employability.
Industry Integration and National Job Mela 2026
In a strategic move to connect skilled students directly with employers, IIT Madras plans to organise a National Job and Internship Mela in early 2026 — either virtually or in-person. This recruitment platform will help companies identify pre-assessed talent efficiently, while offering students direct access to internships and job opportunities based on their NIPTA performance.
IIT Madras stated that the assessment results will be shared with recruiters, enabling data-driven hiring decisions and transparent evaluation of candidates’ competencies.
Vision and Leadership Behind NIPTA
Speaking at the launch event, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said:
“The NIPTA initiative aligns with IIT Madras’ motto of ‘IITM For All’ and aims to democratise opportunities by ensuring every student, irrespective of their institution or background, can demonstrate their employability through a common, credible platform.”
Prof. Srikanth Vedantam, Faculty at the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology and Editorial Board Chair of Shaastra Magazine, added that NIPTA seeks to make employability measurable and transparent, thereby addressing the gap between academic learning and industry expectations.
