In a landmark achievement for Indian chess, 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh clinched the FIDE Women’s World Cup title after a thrilling victory over India’s top-ranked player and reigning World Rapid champion, Koneru Humpy, in the rapid tiebreaks of the final held in Batumi, Georgia, on Monday.

Divya, who was ranked 15th at the start of the tournament, stunned the chess world with her incredible performance throughout the competition. Her journey to the title was marked by consistent excellence and fearless play, defeating several higher-ranked and seasoned international opponents to reach the final.

The title clash between Divya and Humpy was a tense affair. Both classical games ended in hard-fought draws, pushing the contest into the rapid tiebreaks. In the first rapid game, Divya played with the White pieces and the game ended in a draw. However, it was the second rapid game, with Divya as Black, that proved decisive.

With this victory, Divya not only secures the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025 title but also completes her final Grandmaster norm, officially earning the Grandmaster (GM) title. She becomes just the fourth Indian woman to attain this status and the 88th Indian overall, marking a major milestone in Indian chess.

Divya’s campaign stood out for her aggressive approach, meticulous preparation, and calm demeanor under pressure. Despite not being a pre-tournament favourite, she carved her path to glory with determination and skill, showcasing the emergence of a bold new generation of Indian chess players.
