In a significant welfare move, the Bihar state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has approved an increase in the honorarium of Anganwadi Sevikas and Sahayikas working under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). This decision aims to boost the financial well-being of the frontline workers who play a crucial role in the early childhood development and nutrition programs across the state.
Revised Honorarium for Anganwadi Workers
Following the cabinet approval, Anganwadi Sevikas will now receive ₹9,000 per month, up from the previous ₹7,000. Similarly, the honorarium of Anganwadi Sahayikas has been raised from ₹4,000 to ₹4,500 per month. The increased payments are set to be implemented from 1st October 2025, ensuring timely support to the nearly 1.4 lakh Anganwadi workers engaged in child care, nutrition, and community health activities.
Strategic Timing Ahead of Assembly Elections
The announcement comes ahead of the Bihar state Assembly elections, scheduled for October–November 2025. The Nitish Kumar government has emphasized that the measure is part of a broader agenda to strengthen social welfare and improve livelihoods for frontline workers and citizens alike.
Other Recent Welfare Initiatives in Bihar
The increase in honorarium follows several other welfare measures recently announced by the state government:
- On 29th August 2025, a financial assistance scheme for women entrepreneurs was launched to promote self-reliance and encourage small businesses.
- On 17th July 2025, the state announced up to 125 units of free electricity for consumers, aiming to provide relief to households.
- The old-age pension scheme was revised, with pensions being tripled, enhancing financial security for senior citizens.
- The monthly allowance for panchayat representatives has been increased by 1.5 times, acknowledging the responsibilities shouldered by local governance officials.
- The honorarium for Jeevika workers, who are involved in administrative tasks, training, and self-help group activities, has also been doubled, providing substantial financial support to grassroots-level employees.
These initiatives collectively reflect the Bihar government’s commitment to social welfare, women empowerment, and community development.
Importance of Anganwadi Sevikas and Sahayikas
Anganwadi Sevikas and Sahayikas serve as the backbone of the Integrated Child Development Scheme, delivering essential services such as nutrition, early childhood education, and healthcare awareness. The increased honorarium not only recognizes their dedication and service but also motivates workers to continue contributing effectively to child development and community welfare programs.
The Bihar cabinet’s decision to hike the honorarium for Anganwadi Sevikas and Sahayikas is a major step towards supporting frontline workers and enhancing the implementation of the ICDS across the state. By providing financial incentives, the Nitish Kumar government aims to strengthen social welfare, empower women workers, and ensure effective delivery of community services. This measure, along with other welfare schemes, underscores the state’s focus on inclusive growth and development.
