In a heartwarming move that bridges sports achievement with social welfare, Kerala’s General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced on Sunday that the Education Department will construct houses for deserving gold medal winners of the Kerala School Olympics, the state’s prestigious annual sports meet.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Sivankutty said that the initiative’s primary goal is to build at least 50 houses for student athletes who have achieved excellence in sports but come from underprivileged backgrounds. “Discussions have already been held with various organisations, and the response has been very positive,” he stated, adding that the move reflects the government’s commitment to nurturing young sporting talent while addressing their social needs.
A Step Towards Empowering Student Athletes
The Kerala School Olympics is one of India’s most recognized platforms for identifying and promoting school-level sporting talent. Every year, hundreds of students from across the state compete for glory in athletics, swimming, football, and other events.
Minister Sivankutty emphasized that while many students have brought laurels to the state, some of them live in financially challenging conditions. “I have personally learned about the poor conditions of some athletes’ homes, including those of gold medal winners and record-setters,” he noted, highlighting the urgent need for this initiative.
The Minister revealed that several organizations have already stepped forward to support the noble cause. For instance, the CPI(M) Idukki District Committee will construct a house for Devapriya, a gold medal-winning athlete from Idukki, while the Kerala Scouts and Guides under the Education Department will build a house for Devananda, a young athlete from Kozhikode.
Public Participation Encouraged
Minister Sivankutty also appealed to the public to join hands with the government in this effort. He invited individuals, NGOs, and community groups to contribute financially or through construction materials to make the initiative sustainable and impactful.
“This is not just about building houses; it’s about building confidence and hope among our young champions,” he said. “We want every student who represents Kerala in the School Olympics to know that their hard work and success matter to society.”
Collaboration and Positive Response
The Education Department of Kerala has already begun consultations with several public and private organizations to mobilize resources for the project. Early responses from community groups, educational institutions, and local bodies have been “extremely encouraging,” according to the Minister.
The house construction project is expected to serve as a model for integrating sports welfare with education policy, ensuring that financial hardship does not become a barrier to athletic excellence.
Kerala School Olympics 2025: Promoting Sports and Inclusion
The ongoing Kerala School Olympics, which concludes on October 28, has already drawn attention for its inclusive participation and record-breaking performances. This new welfare initiative adds a humanitarian dimension to the event, making it more than just a sports competition — it’s now a platform for social transformation through sports.
Kerala’s initiative to build homes for deserving gold medal winners of the School Olympics stands as a testament to the state’s commitment to educational equity, sports development, and social responsibility. By combining compassion with policy action, Minister V Sivankutty and the Education Department are setting a powerful example for the rest of the country — where student achievement, regardless of economic background, is celebrated and supported.
