Indira Gandhi National Disability Scheme (IGNDS) is a significant initiative under the National Social Assistance Program (NSAP) by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The scheme aims to provide financial assistance in the form of monthly pensions to persons with severe disabilities, helping improve their quality of life and ensuring social inclusion.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The core objective of the IGNDS is to provide social security and dignity to disabled individuals who are often marginalized and financially disadvantaged. It ensures that Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) who belong to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category and suffer from 80% or more disability, receive a monthly pension to support their basic needs. The scheme is applicable to Indian citizens aged 18 years and above.
BENEFITS OFFERED
- For Divyangjan aged 18–79 years, a monthly pension of ₹300 is provided.
- For those aged 80 years and above, the monthly pension is ₹500.
This support plays a critical role in reducing economic dependence and promoting self-respect among beneficiaries.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible for the scheme:
- The applicant must be 18 years or older.
- Must be a resident of India.
- Must suffer from 80% or more physical or mental disability.
- Must possess a disability certificate issued by a government medical authority.
- Must belong to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category.
- Dwarfs are also covered under the scheme.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Eligible individuals can apply both online and offline. For online applications:
- Visit the UMANG app or official NSAP portal.
- Login using a mobile number and OTP.
- Search for “NSAP” and select “Apply Online”.
- Fill out the form with basic details, upload a photograph, and select the preferred pension payment mode.
- Submit the application online.
