The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has officially published the syllabus for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026, with the entrance examination scheduled for February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. The national-level test will assess candidates’ comprehensive understanding of undergraduate-level subjects across engineering, technology, science, commerce, arts, architecture, and humanities.
Registrations for GATE 2026 will open on August 25, 2025. The exam will serve as a gateway to MTech, MS, and PhD programmes at IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs). In addition, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) will also use GATE 2026 scores for recruitment purposes.
Exam Structure and New Additions
The GATE 2026 question paper will feature 30 papers, including both full and sectional papers. A notable addition this year is the Energy Science section, introduced under the Engineering Sciences category to cater to the growing demand for expertise in sustainable energy technologies.
Candidates can opt to appear in one or two papers, but only from pre-approved paper combinations as specified in the official notification. The test will be conducted exclusively in English and will carry a total of 100 marks.
The General Aptitude (GA) section, common to all papers, will account for 15 marks, with the remaining 85 marks dedicated to subject-specific questions based on the chosen syllabus.
Marking Scheme
The marking system for GATE 2026 will award either 1 mark or 2 marks for each correct answer, depending on the question weightage. However, negative marking will apply for multiple-choice questions (MCQs):
- 1-mark questions: 1/3 mark deducted for each wrong answer
- 2-mark questions: 2/3 mark deducted for each wrong answer
No negative marking will apply to numerical answer type (NAT) questions and multiple-select questions (MSQs).
Score Validity and Importance
The GATE 2026 score will be valid for three years from the date of the result declaration, providing candidates with flexibility to apply for postgraduate admissions or PSU recruitments within this period.
