In a significant step towards expanding access to health protection, HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company has partnered with PhonePe, India’s leading digital payments platform, to launch an affordable health insurance solution for the country’s ‘missing middle’ population. The collaboration brings together a digital-first insurer and a widely used digital payment platform, aiming to make health insurance more accessible, affordable, and convenient for millions of Indians.
Affordable Health Insurance Starting at Rs 12 Per Day
The newly launched policy offers premiums starting at just Rs 12 per day—around Rs 4,380 per year—for coverage of Rs 3 lakh. Customers can directly purchase the policy through the PhonePe app, making the process seamless, paperless, and entirely digital.
This partnership addresses a critical challenge in India’s insurance sector—the ‘missing middle’, which includes individuals who are neither covered by government health insurance schemes nor able to afford expensive private health plans. By offering low-cost premiums and instant digital access, the initiative is designed to bring millions of uninsured Indians under the health protection umbrella.
Targeting Young First-Time Insurance Buyers
The policy primarily targets individuals aged 18 to 30 years, many of whom are first-time insurance buyers. This demographic often overlooks health insurance due to lack of awareness, high premiums, or misconceptions about coverage.
By integrating health insurance into the PhonePe ecosystem, which already serves millions of young, tech-savvy users, HDFC ERGO aims to enhance awareness, accessibility, and adoption. The plan provides comprehensive coverage benefits at an entry-level price, encouraging young individuals to start their insurance journey early.
Digital-First Approach for Seamless Access
The tie-up leverages HDFC ERGO’s expertise in digital-first insurance solutions and PhonePe’s massive digital payments user base. Customers can not only purchase but also manage their policies, raise claims, and track status directly within the PhonePe app. This convenience is expected to significantly boost adoption rates and reduce the traditionally complex process of buying insurance.
Bridging the Insurance Gap in India
India continues to face a low insurance penetration rate, particularly among urban informal workers, gig economy professionals, and lower-income groups. The HDFC ERGO–PhonePe partnership directly addresses this gap by designing an inclusive and affordable health insurance product that reaches the underserved middle segment.
Experts believe this initiative could serve as a model for digital insurance distribution, combining affordability with accessibility through trusted digital platforms. By focusing on the ‘missing middle,’ the partnership aligns with the larger goal of financial inclusion and universal health coverage in India.
A Step Towards Health Security for All
With premiums as low as Rs 12 per day and easy access via the PhonePe app, this health insurance solution is expected to benefit millions of uninsured Indians, especially the youth. The collaboration between HDFC ERGO and PhonePe underscores the transformative role of technology in bridging healthcare protection gaps.
