The Ministry of Tribal Affairs is set to launch Adi Vaani, India’s first AI-powered tribal language translator, marking a groundbreaking step towards safeguarding indigenous culture and bridging communication gaps. Developed in collaboration with IIT Delhi, BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Nava Raipur, and Tribal Research Institutes, this innovative mobile app will empower tribal communities while strengthening inclusive governance.
Adi Vaani: An AI-Powered Innovation for Tribal Languages
The Adi Vaani app will initially support Santali, Bhili, Mundari, and Gondi, with more languages such as Kui and Garo to be added in the next phase. The Android version will be available on the Google Play Store, while an iOS version is expected soon.
By using advanced AI models like NLLB (No Language Left Behind) and IndicTrans2, Adi Vaani enables real-time translation, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This allows users to seamlessly translate conversations, educational material, and government schemes into native tribal languages, thereby making communication more accessible.
Preserving Indigenous Heritage with Technology
India is home to more than 700 tribal communities and over 350 recognized tribal languages, many of which are on the verge of extinction. The launch of Adi Vaani is a significant step towards digital preservation of folklore, oral traditions, and cultural heritage.
