The Karnataka Education Department has taken a significant leap in innovative pedagogy with the release of 5E’s Lesson Plans for Class 6 and 7 students across all subjects. Developed by expert teachers and academic resource groups, these lesson plans follow the 5E instructional model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—a globally recognized method for active and inquiry-based learning.
This initiative aims to strengthen classroom teaching practices and improve student engagement and comprehension. By using the 5E model, the lesson plans encourage students to think critically, connect concepts with real-life situations, and construct knowledge through exploration and interaction rather than rote memorization.
The 5E’s lesson plans have been meticulously prepared for core subjects such as Kannada, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science, and are available in both Kannada and English medium formats. Each lesson plan provides detailed guidance to teachers on how to begin a lesson (Engage), facilitate hands-on activities or discussions (Explore), provide conceptual clarity (Explain), extend learning with new scenarios (Elaborate), and assess understanding (Evaluate).
Teachers can now structure their classes in a more student-centered and activity-based manner, ensuring that learners are not passive recipients but active participants in the learning process. The plans also incorporate competency-based learning outcomes as recommended by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, thus aligning classroom instruction with national educational goals.
The lesson plans have been distributed to Block Resource Centres (BRCs) and are also accessible online through the Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) and other government educational portals. Printed versions are being made available in government and aided schools to ensure wide reach and usability.
Educators across the state have welcomed this move, noting that the 5E model brings clarity, structure, and creativity into the classroom. The implementation of these lesson plans is expected to enhance teaching effectiveness, foster conceptual understanding, and boost academic performance among middle school students.
As Karnataka continues to push forward with reforms in education, the release of the Class 6 and 7 5E’s Lesson Plans marks a vital step in modernizing teaching methods and empowering teachers with practical, outcome-based tools for daily instruction.
