The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), under the Government of India’s ‘Special Campaign 5.0’, has launched an innovative initiative titled the ‘Clean Toilet Picture Challenge’ — a nationwide cleanliness drive that empowers National Highway users to report dirty toilets at Toll Plazas and get rewarded for their contribution towards ensuring hygiene and sanitation.
The campaign is part of the government’s broader vision to promote cleanliness, transparency, and efficiency in governance while enhancing the overall travel experience on India’s extensive network of National Highways.
About the Clean Toilet Picture Challenge
Under the new Clean Toilet Picture Challenge, any National Highway user can report a dirty toilet located at an NHAI-operated Toll Plaza by uploading a geo-tagged, time-stamped photo through the latest version of the ‘RajmargYatra’ app.
Participants are required to provide essential details, including:
- Name of the user
- Location of the toilet
- Vehicle Registration Number (VRN)
- Mobile number
Each valid report will be verified through AI-assisted screening and manual validation to ensure authenticity.
Attractive Rewards for Participants
To encourage participation, NHAI has announced a reward of ₹1,000 for each valid report of a dirty toilet. The reward will be given in the form of a FASTag recharge, credited directly to the linked Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) provided by the highway user.
Key Conditions:
- Each VRN is eligible for only one reward during the entire campaign period.
- The reward is non-transferable and cannot be claimed in cash.
- Each toilet facility will be eligible for only one reward per day, irrespective of the number of reports received for that location.
- Only the first valid image reported for a specific toilet on a given day will be eligible for the reward.
- Manipulated, duplicate, or previously reported images will be rejected.
The initiative is open till 31st October 2025 and covers all toilets constructed, operated, or maintained by NHAI. Toilets located at fuel stations, Dhabas, or other private/public facilities not under NHAI’s control are excluded from this scheme.
Encouraging Public Participation in Cleanliness
The campaign is designed to make citizens active stakeholders in maintaining hygiene along the highways. By leveraging technology and public engagement, NHAI aims to ensure that toilet facilities at Toll Plazas remain clean, accessible, and user-friendly at all times.
The initiative also reinforces the government’s broader goals under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the Special Campaign 5.0, emphasizing public participation in service improvement and clean infrastructure maintenance.
Part of the Broader Special Campaign 5.0
The Clean Toilet Picture Challenge is among several activities launched under Special Campaign 5.0, which focuses on enhancing efficiency, transparency, and cleanliness in infrastructure management.
Other initiatives include:
- Removal of potholes and maintenance of road surfaces.
- Beautification of flyovers and Toll Plazas through murals and artwork.
- Cleanliness drives at highway facilities.
- Installation of road safety signage and public awareness messaging.
- Removal of encroachments on the Right of Way (ROW).
By addressing these key areas, NHAI aims to elevate the travel experience on National Highways, making them safer, cleaner, and more welcoming for commuters.
The ‘Clean Toilet Picture Challenge’ by NHAI under Special Campaign 5.0 is a groundbreaking example of citizen-led governance and digital innovation. By turning travelers into watchdogs of public hygiene, this initiative fosters accountability, community participation, and awareness — essential ingredients for a cleaner and more responsible India.
The campaign not only rewards good citizenship but also reaffirms the government’s commitment to building world-class, hygienic highway infrastructure that truly reflects the spirit of a Swachh and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
