Lucknow University Becomes First in India to Launch One-Year PG Programme Under NEP

In a landmark move, Lucknow University has become the first university in India to fully implement a one-year postgraduate programme under the National Education Policy (NEP). This pioneering initiative is designed for students who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree with research, aligning with NEP’s vision of creating a more flexible, efficient, and globally relevant higher education system.

The newly introduced programme is divided into two semesters and carries 20 academic credits. It focuses on flexibility, interdisciplinarity, and outcome-based learning, reflecting the NEP’s emphasis on holistic education. According to university officials, this move is aimed at redefining postgraduate education by providing a streamlined and research-driven alternative to the traditional two-year model.

The decision to implement the one-year PG programme was formally ratified during the Executive Council meeting held on Saturday, marking the culmination of a year-long academic and administrative preparation. Although the ordinance for the programme structure was approved in August 2024, it took nearly a year to finalize the academic framework, course design, and departmental readiness.

To support students enrolled in this innovative model, the university has introduced several academic reforms. Under the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), learners can select from a wide range of core, elective, and open courses, empowering them to tailor their academic path according to their interests and career goals. The curriculum also encourages interdisciplinary learning, allowing students to opt for subjects beyond their core discipline.

Additionally, the programme offers flexibility in credit transfer, enabling students to complete part of their coursework through national online platforms like SWAYAM or other UGC-recognised institutions.

The curriculum is further enriched with skill-based and value-added courses such as academic writing, data analysis, entrepreneurship, and foreign languages. Students will also be guided by dedicated faculty mentors in course selection, research planning, and academic development.

Officials noted that this course not only shortens the path to a postgraduate degree but also aligns with international standards, making it highly beneficial for students aiming to pursue higher education abroad or seeking opportunities in the global job market.

With this bold step, Lucknow University sets a national precedent, showcasing how Indian institutions can adapt swiftly and effectively to the transformative goals of the NEP.
