The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati is expected to organize the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 for admissions into postgraduate engineering and related programmes for the academic year 2026–27. While the official announcement is awaited, the GATE 2026 exam date is likely to be declared by the end of July 2025, with the application process beginning in August, following the schedule trends from previous years.
The official GATE 2026 information brochure will soon be released on the exam’s official portal. It will include crucial details such as eligibility criteria, exam dates, syllabus, application fees, exam pattern, marking scheme, and the list of subjects. Additionally, a dedicated FAQ section will assist candidates in resolving common queries about the exam.
According to the eligibility criteria, candidates currently studying in the third or final year of any undergraduate degree programme or those who have already completed a government-recognized degree in fields like engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, or humanities are eligible to apply.
GATE 2026 will feature 30 test papers, and candidates will be allowed to appear for up to two papers, depending on the combination options provided. In a recent update, a new subject — Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — has been added, reflecting the evolving trends in technology and academia.
The exam will be conducted in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode and will have a duration of three hours. The question paper will be divided into two sections — General Aptitude and the subject-specific section selected by the candidate. Questions will carry 1 or 2 marks each, and the exam will include negative marking for incorrect answers, as per the defined marking scheme.
GATE is a prestigious national-level exam that evaluates a candidate’s comprehensive knowledge of undergraduate-level subjects. It serves as a gateway for admissions into MTech, ME, and PhD programmes at top engineering institutes like IITs, NITs, and IISc. Moreover, several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in India use GATE scores for recruitment.
Aspirants are advised to regularly visit the official GATE 2026 website for the latest updates and begin their preparation early to secure a strong performance in one of the most competitive technical exams in the country,
