The Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT), Karnataka, has officially released the comprehensive Bilingual Year Plan for the academic year 2025–26 for students from Class 1 to Class 7. This initiative aims to strengthen the teaching-learning process by providing structured academic planning across all core subjects — Kannada, English, Hindi, Mathematics, Environmental Studies (EVS), Science, and Social Science — in both Kannada and English mediums.
The Bilingual Year Plan is a significant step towards the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 goals, which emphasize multilingualism and inclusive education. By providing teaching plans in both Kannada and English, DSERT is ensuring that students develop strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills in their mother tongue and in English, enabling smoother transitions between languages and better comprehension of academic content.
Each subject’s plan outlines week-by-week learning objectives, activities, assessments, and project work for the entire academic year. Teachers will benefit from this systematic guidance, allowing them to organize lessons more effectively and ensure syllabus completion within the stipulated time. The plans also include scope for remedial teaching, activity-based learning, and integration of ICT tools, thereby promoting child-centered education.
Subjects like Mathematics and Science are presented with visual and conceptual explanations in both languages, facilitating better understanding for students who are still developing English language skills. Language subjects — Kannada, English, and Hindi — focus on reading fluency, vocabulary development, and grammar through contextual learning strategies.
With this release, DSERT is also promoting teacher autonomy and flexibility by offering suggested timeframes and evaluation strategies, rather than rigid timetables. This approach empowers teachers to address the unique learning needs of their students, especially in multilingual classrooms.
School administrators, teachers, and academic coordinators across Karnataka are encouraged to download the year plans from the official DSERT Karnataka website and integrate them into their lesson planning from Day 1 of the academic year. The bilingual model is expected to foster linguistic confidence, conceptual clarity, and academic consistency among primary and upper primary learners.
The release of the 2025–26 Bilingual Year Plan marks another progressive step by DSERT Karnataka toward equitable, inclusive, and quality education for all children in the state
