The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has reiterated the importance of completing the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for children who have reached the age of seven but have not yet updated their biometrics in Aadhaar. This is an existing requirement under the Aadhaar framework to ensure accuracy and validity of biometric records. To facilitate the process, UIDAI has begun sending SMS alerts to the registered mobile numbers linked with such Aadhaar accounts, reminding parents and guardians to complete the update.
WHY MBU IS IMPORTANT
Children enrolled under Aadhaar before the age of five are issued Aadhaar based on demographic information such as name, date of birth, gender, address, and a facial photograph. At that age, biometric data like fingerprints and iris scans are not collected, as they are not fully developed. Once a child turns five, their first MBU becomes mandatory, wherein fingerprints, iris, and a new photograph are collected.
UIDAI advises that the biometric update should ideally be done between the ages of five and seven, during which it is completely free of cost. However, if the update is delayed beyond the age of seven, a nominal fee of ₹100 is applicable. More importantly, failure to update the biometrics even after turning seven can result in deactivation of the child’s Aadhaar number, as per existing UIDAI guidelines.
WHERE TO UPDATE
Parents or guardians can visit any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or designated Aadhaar enrollment centre to complete the update process. The procedure is simple and typically requires the presence of the child along with the original Aadhaar card and supporting documents.
AADHAAR FOR EVERY STEP OF LIFE
An Aadhaar with updated biometric data plays a vital role in ensuring seamless access to essential services. It supports school admissions, application for entrance exams, access to scholarships, and participation in Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes. Ensuring the biometric update is completed on time prevents service disruptions and empowers children with a valid and functional identity document.
UIDAI’s campaign reinforces the message: From enrolment to opportunity, Aadhaar empowers every step. Parents are strongly encouraged to act promptly and complete their child’s MBU to keep their Aadhaar valid, secure, and service-ready.
