Tesla, the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has officially entered the Indian market by launching its first experience centre in Mumbai. Located in the premium Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the sleek showroom marks the company’s long-anticipated foray into India. This move also coincides with the launch of Tesla’s Model Y electric SUV, available in two imported variants from the company’s Shanghai Gigafactory.
The Model Y has been introduced at a starting price of ₹59.89 lakh. Tesla will initially offer the standard model with deliveries expected within the current quarter. The long-range rear-wheel drive version will follow, with deliveries planned for the next quarter. Both variants are fully built units (CBUs) imported from China, reflecting Tesla’s strategy of testing market response before setting up local production or assembly.
Bookings for the Model Y have officially begun and are being accepted online and at the new BKC centre. For now, registrations of Tesla vehicles will be limited to three major cities—Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram—signaling a phased rollout of operations in India. These cities have been selected due to their existing EV ecosystems and consumer base interested in premium electric vehicles.
In preparation for the deliveries, Tesla is investing in critical EV infrastructure by setting up charging stations in Mumbai and the Delhi-NCR region. This move is expected to ease range anxiety and provide a seamless ownership experience for early adopters. The charging stations will feature Tesla’s proprietary charging technology, offering fast and convenient access for Model Y owners.
Tesla’s official entry comes after years of speculation, delays, and negotiations with the Indian government over import duties and incentives. The launch of the experience centre and initial vehicle sales marks a significant milestone for India’s EV sector, potentially accelerating interest in sustainable mobility.
Analysts believe Tesla’s India entry could shake up the luxury car segment and boost the adoption of EVs in metropolitan markets. However, price sensitivity and infrastructure challenges remain key hurdles. Still, Tesla’s branding power, technological superiority, and government initiatives toward EV adoption are expected to give it a strong start.
With its BKC experience centre now open and the Model Y available for booking, Tesla is finally steering into India’s growing EV landscape—bringing with it global expectations and the promise of a cleaner, high-tech driving future.
