In a major boost to inland transportation and tourism, the Goa government has launched two new Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ferries—Gangotri and Dwarka—on the Chorao–Ribandar route across the Mandovi river. These modern ferries aim to significantly ease the daily commute for residents and enhance the experience for tourists by drastically cutting travel time.
The newly introduced RoRo vessels are designed with advanced technology and are capable of traveling at speeds of up to 10 knots, which is twice as fast as the traditional ferries previously in operation. As a result, the time taken to cross the Mandovi river has been reduced from 30 minutes to just 12–13 minutes, bringing immense relief to regular travelers.
Each ferry has the capacity to transport 100 passengers, 15 cars, and between 30 to 40 two-wheelers, making them ideal for handling both personal and tourist traffic. The spacious and clearly demarcated vehicle lanes onboard are designed to improve safety and streamline boarding and disembarking procedures.
These ferries are equipped with air-conditioned cabins for passenger comfort, along with emergency medical kits, ensuring passenger safety during transit. The incorporation of such facilities makes these ferries not only efficient but also modern and passenger-friendly.
An important aspect of this project is its Built-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, under which a private operator has taken charge of operating the ferries with zero financial burden on the state government. This public-private partnership (PPP) model reflects a sustainable and cost-effective approach to improving Goa’s transport infrastructure.
The launch of Gangotri and Dwarka aligns with Goa’s broader strategy to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce dependency on congested roadways, particularly during peak tourist seasons. The Chorao–Ribandar corridor is a critical route, serving as a lifeline for island residents and a gateway to eco-tourism destinations like Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.
Residents have welcomed the new ferries, citing enhanced reliability, faster commute times, and better onboard amenities. The initiative is also expected to ease traffic pressure on key bridges and contribute to environmental sustainability by promoting water-based transport.
With Gangotri and Dwarka now operational, Goa takes a progressive step forward in modernizing its ferry network, offering faster, safer, and more comfortable river crossings for all.
