MoHUA and DDWS Launch Fortnight-Long Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign for Clean and Green India

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) are set to roll out Swacchotsav 2025, a fortnight-long Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) campaign from 17th September to 2nd October 2025. This nationwide cleanliness drive aims to reinforce India’s commitment to achieving a clean, green, and sustainable environment. The initiative focuses on cleanliness target units, clean green festivities, and SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir, underlining the vision of a healthier, more eco-friendly India.

Union Ministers emphasized that Swachhata is a continuous jan andolan (people’s movement) and urged states, urban local bodies, and rural communities to actively participate. By tackling legacy waste dumpsites, promoting segregation at source, and using modern waste management techniques, the campaign seeks to drive a zero-waste, sustainable India.

Key Highlights of Swacchotsav 2025

  1. Cleanliness Target Units: MoHUA and DDWS are working with state governments and local bodies to identify key cleanliness units and develop action plans. This includes removal of legacy waste, better solid waste management, and the creation of waste-to-wealth opportunities.
  2. Clean Green Festivities: With the festive season approaching, the campaign promotes eco-friendly celebrations. Citizens are encouraged to reduce single-use plastics, adopt sustainable decorations, and participate in community cleaning drives.
  3. SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir: These special camps focus on the health, safety, and welfare of sanitation workers, recognizing their crucial contribution to the nation’s cleanliness mission.

Citizen Participation and Digital Push

A major focus of Swacchotsav 2025 is citizen engagement through the Swachhata App, enabling real-time reporting of waste hotspots, volunteering for local drives, and tracking cleanliness activities. By harnessing technology and public participation, the government aims to ensure accountability and transparency in waste management.

Building on Swachh Bharat Mission Achievements

The Swachhata Hi Seva campaign reinforces the progress made under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). It seeks to scale up waste segregation, eliminate open dumping, and promote the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). The emphasis on community ownership and inter-departmental collaboration ensures that cleanliness becomes an enduring habit rather than a one-time event.

Call to Action

MoHUA and DDWS are appealing to citizens, schools, community organizations, NGOs, and corporates to join Swacchotsav 2025. By embracing the principles of cleanliness, sustainability, and community service, every individual can contribute to making India clean and green.

The launch of Swacchotsav 2025 – Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign from 17th September to 2nd October is a clarion call for collective action. With initiatives like cleanliness target units, clean green festivities, and SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir, India is taking a decisive step towards a waste-free and sustainable future. Through citizen participation, digital tools like the Swachhata App, and a focus on sanitation workers’ welfare, MoHUA and DDWS are ensuring that Swachhata becomes a way of life for every Indian.
