In a significant boost to India’s maritime defense capabilities, the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ‘Atal’ was launched on July 29, 2025, at Vasco da Gama in Goa. The vessel is the sixth in a series of eight state-of-the-art FPVs being indigenously designed and built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), underlining the nation’s commitment to maritime security and self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
Measuring 52 metres in length and weighing approximately 320 tonnes, Atal is equipped with advanced navigation, communication, and surveillance systems. Its mission profile includes coastal patrols, anti-smuggling and anti-piracy operations, search and rescue missions, and protection of offshore assets. Designed for speed, agility, and multi-role capabilities, the vessel will be a key asset for maritime agencies in enforcing India’s coastal laws and ensuring the safety of critical maritime infrastructure.
The launch ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Ministry of Defence, and GSL. Speaking at the event, representatives emphasized that Atal is a symbol of India’s growing strength in indigenous shipbuilding under the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative.
“The launch of FPV Atal is a proud moment that reflects India’s engineering excellence and growing self-reliance in defense production,” said a GSL spokesperson. “These vessels are designed to operate in extreme maritime conditions and are equipped to carry out missions with high precision and reliability.”
The Fast Patrol Vessel series has been developed using cutting-edge shipbuilding technologies and modern automation systems, ensuring both crew safety and mission efficiency. With a high degree of indigenous content, these vessels contribute directly to strengthening India’s defense industrial base and reducing dependency on foreign equipment.
Atal, named in honor of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, joins the fleet as part of India’s broader effort to secure its 7,500-kilometre-long coastline and exclusive economic zone (EEZ). As threats to maritime security evolve, the deployment of such versatile platforms becomes increasingly crucial.
The launch of Atal is not only a leap forward for India’s naval capabilities but also a testament to the success of the Make in India initiative in the defense sector. The remaining two vessels in the series are expected to be delivered by 2026, further bolstering India’s maritime defense infrastructure.
