IIT Bombay Launches Professional Certificate Programmes in Cybersecurity and Software Development

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has unveiled two new professional certificate programmes aimed at equipping students and working professionals with advanced skills in cybersecurity and software development—two of the most sought-after domains in today’s digital landscape.

Offered through Trust Lab, a dedicated initiative under the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the programmes are designed to promote research and practical training in trustworthy systems. These modular and flexible courses are now open for applications via a Google Form, and have been developed by IIT Bombay faculty to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world implementation.

PROGRAMME TRACKS AND STRUCTURE

Participants can choose from two certification tracks:

  • Professional Certificate in Cybersecurity
  • Professional Certificate in Software Development

To earn a certificate, candidates must successfully complete any three approved courses within their chosen track. The modular structure also allows learners to enrol in individual courses without committing to the full certification initially.

The Cybersecurity track covers topics such as cryptographic protocols, network and web security, and digital vulnerability assessments. Meanwhile, the Software Development track focuses on full-stack engineering, version control, and cloud-native development, with hands-on training in tools like Django, React, Docker, and the MERN stack. Interestingly, some courses like Web Security are common to both tracks and can be credited towards either certification.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The programme is open to:

  • Working professionals with a 3- or 4-year degree in computer science or engineering
  • Final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students in related fields
  • Faculty members from recognised institutions

Admission is course-based, with preference given to motivated applicants or those with relevant industry experience, especially if they intend to pursue the full certification.

BLENDED LEARNING AND EVALUATION

The courses follow a blended learning model, combining pre-recorded lectures, weekend live sessions, and lab assignments. Participants are expected to dedicate 8–10 hours per week.

The evaluation consists of a final in-person exam at IIT Bombay, accounting for 75% of the grade, while continuous assessments, including lab work and quizzes, contribute the remaining 25%.

With its industry-relevant curriculum and rigorous academic backing, IIT Bombay’s new certificate programmes are set to be a valuable stepping stone for professionals and students aiming to advance their careers in cybersecurity and software development.
