Dept of Posts launch Know Your DIGIPIN and Know Your PIN Code portal

In a landmark initiative towards revolutionising India’s addressing and geospatial infrastructure, the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, launched two innovative digital platforms today — ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’. These platforms are pivotal to the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which advocates for the development of a robust digital geospatial ecosystem to enhance governance and public service delivery.

At the heart of this initiative lies the DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) — an open-source, interoperable, geo-coded address system created in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO. The DIGIPIN is built on a grid-based geospatial model, designed to offer “Address-as-a-Service” (AaaS) for seamless integration of address data in services across government and private sectors.

The ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ portal allows users to:

  • Retrieve their DIGIPIN using precise GPS-based location.
  • Input latitude and longitude to generate or search for a corresponding DIGIPIN.
  • Enhance service delivery in logistics, emergency response, and rural connectivity.

By offering precise geographic coordinates, the DIGIPIN system significantly improves location accuracy across various sectors, aiding in timely and efficient service delivery and reducing critical emergency response times, particularly in underserved and remote regions.

Meanwhile, recognising the need to modernise India’s long-standing six-digit PIN Code system introduced in 1972, the Department has embarked on a nationwide geofencing initiative. This involved geo-referencing all postal PIN code boundaries, bringing spatial intelligence into one of India’s most widely used systems.

Based on this updated geospatial framework, the ‘Know Your PIN Code’ web application empowers users to:

  • Identify accurate PIN Codes for a given GNSS-based location.
  • Submit feedback on discrepancies, enabling continuous improvement and accuracy of the national postal dataset.

These two platforms reflect the Department of Posts’ commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology with traditional services. Together, they pave the way for smarter address systems, better e-governance, and a digitally inclusive India. With features that benefit citizens, businesses, and government institutions alike, this move signifies a leap towards a modern, precise, and service-oriented postal ecosystem.
