The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) launched SAFAL (Structured Assessment for Analysing Learning) in July 2021, aligning with Para 4.40 of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. SAFAL – KSA is a competency-based diagnostic assessment tool aimed at helping schools and teachers understand the learning levels and core competencies of students. By providing insights into students’ grasp of fundamental concepts, SAFAL enables educators to enhance instructional practices and personalize learning strategies to meet student needs.
In 2024, CBSE successfully conducted SAFAL 2024–25, with enthusiastic participation from approximately 10,000 CBSE-affiliated schools across India and abroad. This wide implementation marks a significant step in the shift towards competency-based education, as advocated by NEP 2020.
Beginning with the 2025–26 academic session, CBSE has made SAFAL – KSA mandatory for all affiliated schools. The assessment will be conducted for students of Grade 6 and Grade 9, specifically those who have completed Grades 5 and 8 respectively in the 2024–25 session.
