CBDT extends date of filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) 2025-26

CBDT extends date of filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) 2025-26

In response to the extensive revisions made to the notified Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and to ensure a smooth and efficient filing process for taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of the due date for filing ITRs for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26.

Originally scheduled for 31st July 2025, the due date has now been extended to 15th September 2025. This decision was taken in light of the significant structural and content-related changes introduced in the ITR forms, which require additional time for system updates, utility development, and thorough testing before being made available to taxpayers.

The newly notified ITRs for AY 2025-26 aim to streamline compliance, enhance the ease of filing, and promote accurate reporting. These improvements align with the government’s vision of simplifying the tax administration system. However, the rollout of these revised forms demands sufficient lead time for integration with the Income Tax Department’s e-filing systems.

One key factor necessitating the extension is the delay in the availability of tax credit details, such as those from TDS statements, which are due to be filed by 31st May 2025. Typically, these credits start reflecting in taxpayers’ accounts by early June, leaving a narrow window for accurate return filing. Without the extension, many taxpayers may have found it difficult to reconcile these details in time.

The CBDT’s proactive decision is aimed at addressing concerns raised by tax professionals, chartered accountants, and stakeholders, many of whom highlighted the challenges associated with the revised filing process and tight timelines. The extension will not only reduce compliance stress but also help in maintaining the quality and accuracy of returns filed.

A formal notification confirming the new due date is being issued separately by the Ministry of Finance. Taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of this extended window to prepare and file their returns accurately while keeping in mind the new ITR structure.

This move reflects the government’s commitment to taxpayer convenience and systemic transparency, ensuring that the filing process remains efficient, inclusive, and robust in the face of regulatory evolution, for more details CLICK HERE
