In a major step to curb misuse and ensure transparency in Tatkal ticket bookings, Indian Railways has introduced significant changes to the existing system. These reforms aim to protect genuine passengers and enhance the efficiency of the Tatkal booking process. The new provisions will be implemented in a phased manner beginning July 2025.
AADHAAR AUTHENTICATION FOR ONLINE TATKAL BOOKINGS
Starting 1st July 2025, Aadhaar authentication will become mandatory for all Tatkal tickets booked through the IRCTC official website and mobile app. Only users with verified Aadhaar credentials will be able to access the Tatkal booking facility. Furthermore, from 15th July 2025, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will also be required for completing the booking process online. This two-step verification is expected to minimize fraudulent bookings and improve passenger accountability.
OTP AUTHENTICATION FOR PRS COUNTERS AND AUTHORISED AGENTS
In addition to online bookings, Indian Railways will extend system-based OTP authentication to Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and authorised agents. From 15th July 2025, passengers booking Tatkal tickets at PRS counters or through agents will receive an OTP on the mobile number provided during the booking.
This measure will help ensure that bookings are linked to valid contact information, thereby reducing instances of identity misuse.
BOOKING RESTRICTIONS FOR AUTHORISED AGENTS
To prevent mass bookings by agents during the critical opening minutes, Indian Railways has introduced a new time restriction for authorised ticketing agents. From 15th July 2025, agents will be prohibited from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window. This restriction applies to:
- AC Classes: From 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM
- Non-AC Classes: From 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM
This step is aimed at giving individual users a fair opportunity to secure Tatkal tickets during the peak booking time.
These reforms by Indian Railways are part of a broader initiative to modernize ticketing practices, promote genuine usage, and ensure equitable access for all passengers. Travellers are advised to update their Aadhaar details on the IRCTC platform in advance and ensure mobile numbers are active and accessible for OTP authentication, for more details CLICK HERE
