Tripura has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first state in India to ensure Wi-Fi connectivity in 100% of government general degree colleges. Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated high-speed wireless internet facilities in 11 colleges on Tuesday, marking the completion of a transformative digital infrastructure project for higher education.
With this achievement, thousands of students and faculty members across the state now have reliable access to digital learning tools, online resources, and advanced research platforms — contributing significantly to the state’s education reform initiatives.
Completion of Second Phase Strengthens Digital Network
The Tripura College Wi-Fi Project, launched in October last year, was designed and implemented in two efficient phases to fast-track campus digitization.
- Phase 1: Connected 19 colleges with a 100 Mbps high-speed backbone network
- Phase 2: Newly launched; covers the remaining 11 institutions, completing statewide rollout
Each government college has now been equipped with around 20 wireless access points, enabling seamless, uninterrupted Wi-Fi coverage across classrooms, libraries, hostels, and administrative buildings. The digitally advanced initiative was completed at a project cost of ₹12.32 crore.
Chief Minister Saha emphasized that uninterrupted internet access is crucial to fostering digital education, innovation, and collaboration in academic environments.
He said, “The project bridges the digital divide, encourages innovation, and enhances digital literacy among students. It is an important step towards integrating technology into the core of our higher education system.”
Support Through Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana (MYYY)
In a student-centric announcement, the Chief Minister also declared the expansion of the Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana, which provides ₹5,000 financial assistance to college students for purchasing smartphones.
Previously, only final-year students of government degree colleges were eligible. Now, students from 1st year to final year will receive the benefit — enabling wider smartphone access and promoting equal participation in digital education.
Saha pointed out that improving both internet infrastructure and access to smart devices is essential for a successful digital learning environment.
Major Technological Investments in the Pipeline
In addition to Wi-Fi expansion, the state government has allotted land to Bharti Airtel for establishing a data centre near Agartala, with an investment of approximately ₹200 crore. This future-ready initiative is expected to boost digital services, data security, and digital governance within the region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Finance and IT Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman, and Industries & IT Secretary Kiran Gitte, who expressed pride in Tripura’s technology-driven progress in education.
Tripura’s Digital Education Revolution
With the successful implementation of campus-wide Wi-Fi in all degree colleges, Tripura is setting a national model for digital empowerment in higher education. The move aligns with the Digital India vision and prepares students to compete globally by strengthening their digital skills, e-learning adoption, and technological exposure.
