BCI Extends AIBE Result Validity Till March 31, 2026 | Major Relief for Law Graduates

In a significant relief for thousands of law graduates across the country, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has officially extended the validity of All India Bar Examination (AIBE) results till March 31, 2026. This decision comes after widespread concerns regarding delays in enrolment procedures at various state bar councils, which prevented many eligible candidates from starting their legal practice despite clearing AIBE.

Karnataka High Court Raises the Issue

The development emerged during a hearing before Justice Suraj Govindaraj of the Karnataka High Court. The case involved two law graduates who had successfully passed the AIBE but were unable to complete their formal enrolment with the Karnataka State Bar Council (KSBC) due to administrative backlogs and document processing delays.

Taking note of their plea, the High Court observed that numerous candidates across India were experiencing similar difficulties — their AIBE result validity expired before enrolment formalities could be finalised, putting their professional future at risk.

Relief for Law Graduates Awaiting Bar Council Enrolment

Responding to these concerns, the BCI informed the court that it had proactively decided to extend AIBE result validity up to March 31, 2026, ensuring that no qualified candidate suffers due to technical or bureaucratic hurdles.

This extension is set to benefit:

  • Candidates whose AIBE validity had lapsed or was nearing expiry
  • Graduates awaiting document verification at state bar councils
  • Aspirants facing delays in administrative processing due to high application volumes

The High Court acknowledged the BCI’s decision as a practical solution that would prevent aspiring advocates from being unfairly barred from entering the profession.

Petitioners Also Challenge Verification Fee

Alongside the request for extension, the petitioners urged the High Court to:

  • Direct KSBC to expedite enrolment processing
  • Stop insisting on additional document verification
  • Refund the ₹2,500 verification fee, which they argued was not supported by provisions of the Advocates Act

However, the court refrained from issuing any directions on the matter, noting that the legality of the verification fee is already under review by the Supreme Court in WP No. 352/2023.

A Temporary Yet Significant Policy Move

The BCI’s policy extension is seen as a crucial intervention that aligns with its statutory objective of regulating the legal profession and supporting access to justice. By extending the AIBE certificate validity:

  • State bar councils receive additional time to address pending enrolments
  • Fresh law graduates can continue professional activities without interruption
  • Legal aspirants gain clarity and security during the transition into advocacy

Legal education experts believe this move reinforces the importance of fair regulatory practices and demonstrates BCI’s willingness to respond to real-world administrative challenges.

With the AIBE result validity now extended till March 31, 2026, law graduates can confidently proceed with their enrolment process and begin their legal careers. The decision brings much-needed relief to aspiring advocates who have long been awaiting a smooth entry into the Indian legal profession.
