A new poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals a notable shift in sentiment among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities toward former U.S. President Donald Trump. The findings show a decline in favorability, with many respondents citing concerns over economic policies, immigration rhetoric, and cultural inclusion.
The poll, released ahead of the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election cycle, found that less than one-third of AAPI respondents view Trump favorably, a decline from previous years. This shift is attributed largely to worsening perceptions of economic inequality, with many in the AAPI community expressing frustration over inflation, housing affordability, and healthcare costs—issues they believe were either poorly managed or exacerbated during Trump’s administration.
Historically, the AAPI electorate has been politically diverse, with voting patterns varying widely by ethnicity, immigration history, and regional demographics. However, the new poll suggests a growing consolidation of dissatisfaction, particularly among younger AAPI voters and those living in urban areas. Economic anxiety was the leading issue cited by respondents, followed by concerns over anti-Asian hate incidents and the perceived lack of inclusive leadership under Trump’s presidency.
Trump’s previous remarks during the COVID-19 pandemic, which included racially charged language, continue to resonate negatively within the community. Many respondents felt that such rhetoric helped normalize discrimination, fueling a wave of anti-Asian sentiment across the country.
By contrast, support for Democratic candidates remains relatively stable among AAPI voters, though the poll also highlights that many are not firmly committed and are actively seeking candidates with clear, inclusive policy agendas. Younger AAPI respondents, in particular, indicated a strong desire for leaders who prioritize racial justice, education affordability, and climate action—issues they feel are insufficiently addressed by Trump’s platform.
The AAPI community is one of the fastest-growing racial groups in the United States and is expected to play a critical role in key swing states during the 2024 elections. The declining favorability toward Trump suggests potential challenges for his campaign, particularly in states with significant AAPI populations like California, Nevada, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.
As political campaigns intensify, both major parties are expected to ramp up outreach to the AAPI demographic, recognizing its growing influence and nuanced concerns. The latest poll underscores the importance of policy-driven engagement over rhetoric in earning the trust of this diverse and dynamic voter bloc.
