NIEPID and Jai Vakeel Foundation Join Hands to Empower Children with Intellectual Disabilities

In a landmark move to strengthen inclusive education, the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Jai Vakeel Foundation in July 2025. This strategic partnership aims to provide a structured and scalable curriculum for Children with Intellectual Disabilities (CwID) across India through the transformative DISHA Abhiyan.

The DISHA Abhiyan initiative marks a significant step toward bridging the educational gap for children with intellectual disabilities by offering tailored learning experiences. At the core of this initiative is the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), which cater to each child’s unique strengths, needs, and learning pace. These plans will be supported by a multisensory curriculum, ensuring that students engage with content through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods for better comprehension and retention.

The MoU also includes the creation of a dedicated digital portal that will serve as a central platform for learning resources, assessments, and progress tracking. In addition, comprehensive training modules will be developed to equip educators and caregivers with the skills required to implement the curriculum effectively. This holistic approach ensures not only access to education but also the empowerment of stakeholders involved in the teaching and learning process.

The initiative is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), reinforcing India’s commitment to inclusive and equitable education. Furthermore, it supports the national vision of Viksit Bharat, which emphasizes equal opportunities, social justice, and accessible education for all segments of society, including those with special needs.

A critical component of the initiative is the printing and dissemination of accessible learning materials under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities’ Accessible Learning Materials (DALM) Scheme. These printed resources will ensure that children in remote and underserved areas, especially those without digital access, are not left behind.

It represents a powerful step toward ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, receives the support, respect, and quality education they deserve—thus shaping a more inclusive and developed India.
