INS Nistar Commissioned: India’s First Indigenous Diving Support Vessel Boosts Maritime Strength

India took a significant leap in strengthening its underwater maritime capabilities with the commissioning of INS Nistar, the nation’s first indigenous Diving Support Vessel (DSV). Designed and built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), the vessel represents a milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing, aligning strongly with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

INS Nistar has been purpose-built to support deep-sea diving operations and submarine rescue missions up to a depth of 300 meters. It will serve as a mother ship for Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs), enabling the Indian Navy to undertake complex underwater missions with enhanced safety and efficiency. The induction of this advanced vessel significantly boosts the Navy’s capability to carry out search and rescue operations, underwater maintenance, salvage tasks, and specialized naval missions in deep waters.

With over 80% indigenous content, INS Nistar exemplifies the capabilities of India’s defence manufacturing sector. The construction involved the collaboration of more than 120 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country, contributing to high-end components, systems integration, and cutting-edge technology. This not only showcases India’s growing shipbuilding prowess but also supports the government’s initiative to empower local industries and generate employment.

INS Nistar is equipped with state-of-the-art diving systems, remotely operated vehicles, dynamic positioning systems, and advanced communication and navigation tools. The vessel provides the Indian Navy with operational flexibility to address underwater emergencies swiftly, particularly in submarine rescue scenarios where time and precision are critical.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, senior naval officials hailed INS Nistar as a “game changer” for India’s underwater warfare and rescue operations. Its induction marks a new chapter in indigenous shipbuilding and sets a benchmark for future naval projects.

Furthermore, INS Nistar’s commissioning contributes to India’s growing profile as a regional maritime power. It enhances not just operational capabilities but also India’s ability to extend humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in maritime domains.

In every sense, INS Nistar embodies the spirit of self-reliant defence innovation—a product of Indian design, Indian build, and Indian technology. As the vessel sets sail into operational duties, it stands as a proud symbol of India’s maritime ambition and commitment to indigenous excellence.
