WhatsApp Working on Cover Photo Support for All Users

WhatsApp is gearing up to introduce a much-awaited feature that could transform how users personalise their profiles. The Meta-owned messaging platform is reportedly developing cover photo support for all users — a feature currently exclusive to WhatsApp Business accounts. This move suggests a broader push toward greater profile customisation and visual identity enhancements across the app.

WhatsApp Cover Photos: What Users Can Expect

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is experimenting with a new feature that enables users to upload a cover image, similar to profile headers seen on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. The image will appear at the top of the user’s profile, giving contacts a more expressive and personal look at their account.

Users will likely be able to select any image from their device through their profile settings, making the feature simple and intuitive once it rolls out globally.

The feature has been spotted in the WhatsApp beta 2.25.32.2 update for Android, currently being released to testers through the Google Play Beta Programme. However, WhatsApp has noted that the feature is still in active development and not yet visible, meaning its public release may take some time.

New Privacy Controls for Cover Photos

Along with custom visuals, WhatsApp is also working on privacy settings to give users control over who can view their new cover image. The options being tested include:

  • Everyone – visible to all WhatsApp users, even those not saved in contacts
  • My Contacts – restricted to contacts only
  • Nobody – hides the cover photo from everyone

These privacy configurations mirror existing options for Profile Photo and Status updates, reinforcing WhatsApp’s focus on maintaining personal security while enabling increased customization.

Personalisation Push on WhatsApp

Profile pictures and display names have long been the primary identity elements on WhatsApp. With over 2 billion active users worldwide, personalization features have become an important way for individuals to represent themselves online.

The cover photo feature marks a significant step forward, enabling richer visual expression within the app. It may also set the stage for future design upgrades including:

  • Enhanced profile layouts
  • More creative profile customization tools
  • Wider integration with other Meta services

Until now, cover photos were available only to WhatsApp Business profiles to help brands create a stronger visual identity. Bringing this feature to personal accounts ensures the experience remains modern and competitive with other major social platforms.

When Will Cover Photos Be Available to Everyone?

Since the feature is still in development, WhatsApp has not confirmed a release timeline. Early indications suggest that users may see cover photos introduced in a future stable update after multiple testing phases on Android and possibly on iOS thereafter.

The upcoming WhatsApp cover photo functionality shows that Meta is continuing to innovate and expand aesthetic options for users. With greater personalization, improved privacy controls, and a more social interface design, WhatsApp aims to enhance user engagement while keeping communication secure.

As development progresses, more details about the global rollout will likely surface through upcoming beta builds.
