Varsha Deshpande Wins 2025 UN Population Award for Lifelong Work in Gender Justice

Renowned women’s rights activist Varsha Deshpande has been awarded the prestigious 2025 UN Population Award in the individual category, recognizing her over three decades of unwavering commitment to gender equality, social justice, and empowerment of Dalit and marginalized women in India.

Deshpande, a lawyer by training, is the founder of the Dalit Mahila Vikas Mandal, an organization she established in 1990 with the mission to uplift women from historically disadvantaged communities. Over the past 35 years, she has become a prominent voice against gender-based violence, caste discrimination, and patriarchal oppression, working relentlessly at the grassroots to advance the rights and dignity of women across rural Maharashtra and beyond.

Her organization focuses on a multifaceted approach to women’s empowerment. It offers vocational training, access to essential resources, and support systems that enable women to achieve financial independence. Through legal aid, public advocacy, and community mobilization, the Dalit Mahila Vikas Mandal has helped thousands of women challenge injustice and rebuild their lives with confidence and self-respect.

The UN Population Award is presented annually by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to individuals and institutions for outstanding contributions in the fields of population, reproductive health, and gender equality. Deshpande’s work aligns deeply with these objectives, particularly in championing the rights of marginalized women to bodily autonomy, safety, and social inclusion.

In the institutional category, the 2025 award was conferred on the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). Founded in 1927, the IUSSP is a leading global organization dedicated to advancing population science and policy. Through rigorous research, international collaboration, and policy engagement, IUSSP has contributed significantly to understanding demographic trends, fertility, mortality, and migration, aiding governments and institutions worldwide in evidence-based decision-making.
