Uttar Pradesh Launches ‘Learning by Doing’ Initiative to Empower Science and Math Teachers

In a major stride towards modernizing education, the Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled a transformative initiative under its ‘Learning by Doing’ programme. Aimed at enriching classroom teaching and seamlessly blending innovation into the educational landscape, this scheme falls under the umbrella of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and the PM SHRI scheme. According to a PTI report, the central objective is to encourage educators to become more experimental, hands-on, and proficient with modern teaching methods.

The initiative features residential training sessions designed for selected science and mathematics teachers, technical instructors, DIET (District Institute of Education and Training) master trainers, and educators from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV). These sessions will be rolled out in phases at the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development and Deen Dayal Upadhyay State Rural Development Institute in Lucknow, creating a vibrant hub for educational excellence and skill-building.

Technical support from UNICEF and the STAR Forum–Vigyan Ashram will bolster the effectiveness of these trainings, which are scheduled to commence on August 5, 2025, and will continue in stages until March 18, 2026. The main aim is to make teachers comfortable with experiential, activity-based learning, ensuring that classroom lessons are logical, practical, and enjoyable for students.

“This initiative will not only enhance teaching capabilities but also ensure students gain real-world knowledge through hands-on learning. It’s a significant step under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath toward improving education quality,” said Sandeep Singh, Uttar Pradesh’s Minister of Basic Education.

Comprehensive Training Structure

The training is expansive and meticulously planned:

  • During 2024-25, 2,074 science/mathematics teachers and technical instructors from 2,274 schools will undertake specialized two-day training.
  • In 2025-26, 1,888 teachers from 3,288 newly selected schools, including those from KGBVs, will undergo three-day workshops.
  • Two science lecturers from each district will receive a four-day Training of Trainers (TOT).
  • Seventy-six DIET faculty members will serve as master trainers.
  • District Coordinators (Community Participation) will also participate in two- or three-day trainings to improve school-community engagement.

A central focus will be on demystifying scientific and mathematical concepts through experimentation, nudging educators toward a student-centric, activity-driven teaching model.

With its ambitious scope and collaborative partnerships, the ‘Learning by Doing’ initiative is set to revolutionize science and math education in Uttar Pradesh—empowering teachers, energizing classrooms, and nurturing a new generation of curious, capable, and future-ready learners.
