India’s Test captain Shubman Gill and England’s spin all-rounder Sophia Dunkley have been crowned the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month for July 2025, respectively. The awards recognise outstanding individual performances across all formats of international cricket during the month.
Gill Claims Fourth Player of the Month Honour
Gill secured the men’s award after edging out England Test skipper Ben Stokes and South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder in a highly competitive field. This marks his fourth ICC Player of the Month award, adding to his previous wins in February 2025, January 2023, and September 2023.
The 25-year-old right-handed batter delivered a string of commanding performances in July, leading India from the front in their Test series. Gill impressed with his consistency, temperament, and ability to convert starts into match-defining knocks. His leadership and batting prowess have been pivotal in cementing India’s dominance in the red-ball format.
Reacting to the award, Gill expressed gratitude to his teammates and coaching staff. “It’s always an honour to be recognised by the ICC, but it’s the collective effort of the team that makes these individual awards possible. July was a memorable month for us, and I’m proud of how we played,” he said.
Dunkley Earns Maiden ICC Women’s Player of the Month Award
On the women’s side, Sophia Dunkley claimed her first-ever ICC Women’s Player of the Month title. The 26-year-old England star was chosen ahead of her compatriot Sophie Ecclestone and Ireland captain Gaby Lewis.
Dunkley’s success in July was built on consistent and impactful batting performances across England’s limited-overs fixtures. Whether opening the innings or anchoring the middle order, she displayed remarkable adaptability, often setting up or finishing games for her side. Her ability to rotate strike, accelerate when needed, and remain composed under pressure drew praise from both fans and cricket experts.
“This award means a lot to me,” Dunkley said in her acceptance statement. “It reflects the hard work I’ve put in over the last few months and the incredible support from my teammates. July was a fantastic month for English cricket, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.”
Recognising Consistency and Match-Winning Performances
The ICC Player of the Month awards, launched in 2021, are determined through a combination of votes from an independent ICC Voting Academy and fans worldwide. Nominees are selected based on performances in international matches during the month, with emphasis on consistency, impact, and match-winning contributions.
For Gill, this latest accolade reinforces his standing as one of the most reliable and dynamic batters in modern Test cricket. For Dunkley, it marks a career milestone and an indication of her growing influence in England’s women’s side.
With both players set for a busy cricketing calendar ahead, their July performances have set the tone for more standout contributions in the months to come.
