Sanchar Mitra Scheme Launched to Empower Youth as Digital Ambassadors and Telecom Awareness Leaders

The Government of India has launched the Sanchar Mitra Scheme, a pioneering initiative aimed at empowering the country’s youth to become agents of digital empowerment and responsible telecom usage. This nationwide scheme, spearheaded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), engages students from technical institutions as Sanchar Mitras to conduct awareness campaigns on key telecom-related issues.

Under the scheme, selected students—termed Sanchar Mitras—will play a crucial role in raising awareness within communities, educational institutions, and public spaces about various telecom-centric topics. These include citizen-friendly telecom services, preventing telecom frauds, mobile device security, digital safety, and responsible telecom practices. Their outreach will help bridge the digital divide and promote safer, more informed usage of digital services across the country.

Eligibility for the scheme is open to students enrolled in technical institutes with active programs in telecommunications, electronics, computers, cybersecurity, or similar fields. Institutes must also express willingness to partner with the initiative. The field offices of the DoT, known as Licensed Service Areas (LSAs), have begun reaching out to such institutions nationwide to facilitate participation and enrollment in the programme.

To ensure the effectiveness of the scheme, Sanchar Mitras will undergo comprehensive training in diverse and dynamic subjects including cybersecurity, emerging technologies in the telecom sector, national telecom policies, and key regulatory frameworks. These trainings will be delivered through workshops, expert sessions, and hands-on experiences.

Beyond training, the scheme offers valuable exposure for students to engage with research and development (R&D) projects, participate in innovation-driven initiatives, learn about International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standards, and attend technical conferences. These experiences are designed to foster a deep understanding of the telecom landscape while preparing the youth to contribute actively to the industry.

The Sanchar Mitra Scheme aligns closely with India’s larger digital vision of becoming a global hub for telecom innovation, research, and manufacturing. By nurturing a skilled and socially responsible youth workforce, the initiative not only enhances public telecom awareness but also contributes meaningfully to national development goals.

Through this initiative, the Government seeks to channel the energy and potential of India’s Yuva Shakti into becoming informed, responsible, and proactive champions of digital and telecom awareness in their communities.
