Rajasthan launches Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Poverty- Free Village Scheme

The Rajasthan government has launched a transformative initiative titled the ‘Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Poverty-Free Village Scheme’, aimed at alleviating rural poverty through focused interventions in livelihood, skill development, and financial inclusion. In its first phase, the scheme targets 5,000 villages with a substantial budget allocation of ₹300 crore, reinforcing the state’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive rural development.

Under this scheme, the government has already identified 30,631 Below Poverty Line (BPL) families across 5,002 villages, using data from BPL Census 2002 and field surveys to ensure accurate and effective targeting. Each village is provided with a customised ‘Poverty-Free Village Action Plan’, which tailors support based on specific local needs, challenges, and economic potential. This strategic planning ensures resources are optimally utilised and progress is measurable.

A major highlight of the scheme is the incentive mechanism to encourage self-driven progress. Families that manage to rise above the poverty line through their own efforts will receive a ₹21,000 reward via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). In recognition of their success, they will also be issued a ‘Self-Reliant Family Card’, symbolising their transition to financial independence.

To boost entrepreneurship and self-employment, the scheme offers up to ₹1 lakh assistance for eligible families to start or expand their businesses. Furthermore, Self-Help Group (SHG) women are provided with a working capital of ₹15,000, empowering them to strengthen their enterprises and contribute to household income. These financial support mechanisms are designed to not only lift families out of poverty but also sustain their growth over time.

The scheme emphasizes a holistic approach, integrating skill development, economic empowerment, and access to financial services. By focusing on capacity building and self-employment, the initiative aims to create long-term impact rather than temporary relief.
