In a major step towards universal healthcare, the Punjab government has officially launched the Mukhya Mantri Sehat Yojana, a flagship health scheme offering free, cashless medical treatment up to ₹10 lakh per year per family. The scheme, which is set to be implemented from October 2, 2025, aims to transform access to quality healthcare for millions across the state.
The Mukhya Mantri Sehat Yojana is poised to benefit around 65 lakh families, covering nearly 3 crore people in Punjab. The scheme is inclusive of all social categories, including farmers, government employees, daily wage workers, and economically vulnerable sections. By ensuring that no one is denied essential medical care due to financial constraints, the initiative represents a significant stride in public welfare.
To enable seamless access to healthcare, digital health cards will be distributed to every eligible family. These cards can be used for cashless treatment at both government and empaneled private hospitals across the state. Over 2,000 types of treatments will be covered under the scheme, including critical procedures like heart surgeries, cancer care, and organ transplants.
One of the notable features of the scheme is the provision for Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries, who will receive an additional ₹5 lakh top-up coverage on top of their existing benefits, thereby raising their total healthcare coverage to ₹10 lakh annually. This integrated model ensures that both central and state resources are efficiently utilized to maximize healthcare outcomes.
The Chief Minister of Punjab emphasized that health is a fundamental right and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering on this promise. The Mukhya Mantri Sehat Yojana not only relieves the economic burden of medical expenses but also reflects the government’s larger goal of inclusive and equitable development.
Healthcare experts have welcomed the move, calling it a progressive policy that can serve as a model for other states. With robust digital infrastructure, wide-ranging disease coverage, and an emphasis on preventive and curative care, the scheme is expected to bring a healthcare revolution in Punjab.
As the implementation date nears, awareness campaigns and beneficiary identification drives are underway, ensuring every eligible citizen is enrolled and empowered to access life-saving treatment without financial worry.
