In a major step toward improving English language proficiency and enhancing employability among students, the Punjab government has launched a large-scale learning initiative titled “The English Edge.” Implemented in collaboration with EnglishHelper, this ambitious programme aims to benefit 750,000 students across 3,600 government schools over a period of three years.
The initiative aligns with the growing demand for English communication skills in higher education and the job market, supporting the state’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education.
Three-Phase Rollout Across All 23 Districts
The English Edge programme will be introduced in three phases:
- Phase I: 500 schools, 300,000 students
- Target group: Grades 9–12
- Coverage: All 23 districts of Punjab
This targeted approach ensures that secondary and senior secondary students gain access to improved reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English, enabling smoother transitions into career pathways and college admissions.
The official announcement highlights that English is a crucial driver of social mobility, opening opportunities for youth in both national and global industries.
A Decade-Long Partnership Strengthens Further
EnglishHelper has been working with Punjab schools since 2013, beginning with a small pilot programme. In 2015, the partnership grew with support from USAID, and by March 2021, the Punjab government formalized the initiative through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to scale technology-enabled English learning across the state.
According to the press release:
- Nearly 150,000 digital classroom sessions have already been conducted
- The focus has remained on reading improvement and comprehension skills
- Teacher-training and skill-building remain core components of the programme
Insights from the pilot show significant gains in student confidence and engagement with English learning.
AI-Powered and Teacher-Led English Instruction
Deepak Verma, CEO of EnglishHelper, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion: “This programme addresses all four pillars of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, through a seamless combination of AI-powered self-learning and teacher-led instruction.”
He added that this model could serve as a transformational example for improving English education across India and internationally.
Blended Learning for NEP 2020 Compliance
The English Edge programme leverages a blended learning ecosystem, combining:
- AI-based self-learning tools
- Curriculum-aligned digital solutions such as ReadToMe
- Classroom instruction guided by teachers
Key highlights:
- Designed to support low-resource school environments
- Implements learning science principles
- Supports Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) goals
- Aligns with NEP 2020 for equitable technology integration
By enabling strong English foundations, the initiative aspires to prepare Punjab’s youth for an increasingly competitive and interconnected world.
With The English Edge, the Punjab government signals a transformative shift toward future-ready skills, ensuring that every student—regardless of background—gets the opportunity to succeed in education and employment on a global stage.
