Procedure to obtain Birth Certificate

Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1969 made registration of births compulsory in the country. These certificates are solid proofs for the legal existence of any individual in country and it acts as source for the census.

Civil registration of major events such as births, deaths, marriages, divorces and fetal deaths is a continuous, permanent and compulsory recording of the occurrence and characteristics of vital events. Birth certificates are permanent records.

ELIGIBILITY

Any citizen or foreigner who is born in the Karnataka state is eligible to get this birth certificate.

PROCESSING TIME T

If all submitted documents are verified then it takes 7 to 14 working days from the date you applied for it.

IMPORTANCE

Every resident of India must apply for the birth certificate to register their birth as it evidences the nationality of a person. The birth certificate is also useful for various purposes such as for admission in school, to obtain a passport, Voter Card, Driving license etc.

WHY SHOULD SOMEONE APPLY FOR BIRTH CERTIFICATE IN KARNATAKA?

  • Legal objective – Upon registering a birth one can get legal proof for a place of birth.
  • Administrative objective – It helps to maintain the legal register of births in particular locality.
  • Statistical objective – It provides demographic data which is helpful for socio-economic planning, population control and other health programs.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

The following documents are to be produced at the time of submitting the application form for the birth certificate:

  • Proof for place of birth (where the child was born) from the medical institution.
  • Parent’s identity proof (Aadhar card, Voter ID etc)
  • Marriage certificate of the parent (optional).

PROCEDURE

Every individual must register the births within 21 days from the date of birth.

  • In case of birth in a Hospital or Nursing Home: The Medical Officer in charge or any person authorized by him on his behalf is the eligible to register the birth.
  • In case of a birth in a house: The head of the household or oldest person is eligible to register the birth with the concerned authority.
  • In case of birth in a public place: The head of the corresponding village in the case of a village or the officer in charge of the local police station is eligible to register the birth.

PROCEDURE FOR REGISTRATION 

  • To obtain a birth certificate, first, the applicant should visit the district statistical office.
  • One needs to submit the birth certificate application form which can be downloaded from the official website.
  • An application form has to be submitted along with the prescribed documents as required.
  • On submission of application, an acknowledgement slip will be given to the applicant.
  • The birth certificate will be issued within 7 days and can be downloaded online as well.

Follow these steps to download Karnataka birth certificate through online:

Step 1: Applicant must visit the official website (http://www.ejanma.karnataka.gov.in). To download the birth certificate.

Step 2: Enter the user name and password to log in.

Step 3: Then click on Birth Free copy to generate the birth certificate.

Step 4: Enter the following details like date of birth, name of the child, father’s name, mother’s name and then submit the search button.

Step 5: Next, the screen appears with the registration number.

Step 6: By clicking on the required registration number, the applicant can print the birth certificate.

HOW TO REGISTER THE BIRTH OF AN ADOPTED CHILD IN KARNATAKA?

Adoption and surrogacy are the latest trends in nowadays. In Karnataka, the registration of births for both is compulsory.

In the case of an adopted child, registration should be done in a different form `birth report for the adopted child’. If birth date and place is, unknown then Chief Medical Officer will issue a birth certificate and the order passed by the Magistrate in that matter.
