Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Namibia’s highest civilian award, The Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, during his one-day state visit to the African nation. With this, Modi becomes the first Indian leader to receive this prestigious honour, marking a significant milestone in India-Namibia diplomatic relations.
The award was presented by Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in a formal ceremony held in the capital city. This symbolic recognition reflects the growing partnership and shared values between India and Namibia, as both countries seek to strengthen their collaboration in areas such as renewable energy, health, education, digital infrastructure, and cultural exchange.
Named after the Welwitschia Mirabilis — a unique and ancient desert plant found only in the Namib Desert — the award signifies resilience, endurance, and longevity, qualities admired in both the plant and the leaders it honours. The award, instituted in 1995, is reserved for distinguished individuals who have made exceptional contributions to global peace, cooperation, and national development.
This recognition marks Modi’s 27th international honour, and notably, the fourth award conferred upon him during his current five-nation diplomatic tour, which underscores his growing stature as a global statesman. During his visit, Modi held high-level bilateral talks with Namibian leaders, focusing on expanding India-Namibia cooperation across strategic sectors, including trade, climate action, and defense.
The Namibian government praised India’s continued support in capacity building and infrastructure development, especially highlighting India’s contribution to healthcare access and vaccine diplomacy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The award also serves to honour India’s role in supporting Namibia’s liberation movement and its post-independence growth.
In his acceptance speech, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the Namibian people and leadership, stating that the honour represents India’s friendship with Africa and a shared vision for sustainable development and global harmony. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to being a reliable development partner to Namibia and the broader African continent.
This landmark event is expected to open new avenues for collaboration and mutual growth, setting the stage for a stronger India-Namibia relationship based on trust, shared values, and people-to-people connections.
