Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), Kottayam, a premier institution in higher education and research, has opened applications for Ph.D. registration for the July 2025 session. The admissions will be conducted in accordance with the MGU Ph.D. Regulations 2025, aligned with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Applicants must have qualified UGC-NET and meet at least one of the following academic criteria:
- A 1-year/2-semester Master’s degree following a 4-year Bachelor’s degree.
- A 2-year Master’s degree after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree.
- A 4-year Bachelor’s (Honours with Research) with a minimum of 75% marks.
- A foreign Master’s degree from institutions ranked within the top 1500 in QS or THE world rankings.
A minimum of 55% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade) is mandatory for eligibility, with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS, and Differently-Abled candidates. The cut-off date for meeting the eligibility criteria is 31 July 2025.
APPROVED SUPERVISORS AND RESEARCH CENTERS
Only regular, approved faculty members from MGU-affiliated Government and Aided Colleges or scientists from MGU-approved research centers with valid guideship are eligible to supervise research. Teachers with less than three years of regular service, those who are retired, on deputation, or adjunct faculty, are not eligible to act as Ph.D. guides.
The availability of vacancies under a supervising teacher will be confirmed during the Doctoral Committee meeting.

SELECTION PROCESS
All eligible UGC-NET qualified candidates will be invited for a Doctoral Interview. The selection process is as follows:
- NET 2024 & 2025 qualified: 70% weightage for NET score, 30% for interview.
- NET qualified before 2024: Selection based solely on a 100-mark interview.
Minimum Qualifying Marks:
- General: 50%
- SC/ST: 45%
