Karnataka Government to Launch ‘Admission Awareness Campaign’ to Boost Enrolment in Govt Schools

In a proactive move to strengthen the public education system and boost student enrolment, the Department of School Education and Literacy, Karnataka, will launch a state-wide ‘Admission Awareness Campaign’ from next month. The initiative, announced by Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa, aims to highlight the quality of education, infrastructure, and opportunities offered by government schools—especially Karnataka Public Schools (KPS)—for the 2026–27 academic year.

The campaign comes as part of the state’s broader strategy to ensure that government schools compete effectively with private institutions, attracting more students across urban and rural regions.

Government Schools Gear Up for Enrolment Drive

Addressing the media, Minister Madhu Bangarappa stated that the Admission Awareness Campaign would involve collaboration among government officials from various departments, teachers, and elected representatives. Together, they will engage communities, conduct outreach programs, and showcase the improvements made in government schools over recent years.

“We have the best teachers and excellent infrastructure, especially at Karnataka Public Schools, where students can study up to pre-university level on the same campus,” said the minister.

800 Schools to be Upgraded as Karnataka Public Schools (KPS)

As part of the initiative, 800 government schools across the state will soon be designated as Karnataka Public Schools (KPS). These institutions will serve as model schools that combine academic rigor with holistic education.

The state government has earmarked ₹4 crore to upgrade these schools, equipping them with modern amenities, libraries, and enhanced classroom facilities.

“We want 1,200 students admitted to each KPS. The intake for pre-primary and class one will be increased from the current 30–40 to 50–60 students,” Education Minister said.

He further announced that arts and music education would be made available at every KPS, ensuring students receive a well-rounded education that balances academics with creativity and expression.

Dual-Medium and Tech-Enabled Learning

To make education more inclusive and future-ready, KPS schools will offer both Kannada and English medium instruction up to Class 5. After that, students can choose their preferred language of study.

Significantly, computer science will be introduced from Class 1, giving students early exposure to digital literacy. The government also plans to provide free transportation for students, further easing access to education.

For the first time, each KPS will have a governing council chaired by the local legislator to monitor the institution’s progress and ensure accountability.

Introduction of Moral Science Education

In another first, Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced that moral science lessons will become an integral part of the state curriculum starting this academic year. The lessons will initially be offered in digital format, considering that half the academic year has already passed.

“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will unveil the content for moral science lessons on November 1, and it will also be made available for public review,” said the minister.

From next year, moral science classes will be conducted weekly or fortnightly, focusing on values such as empathy, compassion, honesty, integrity, civic responsibility, diversity, and sustainable living.

A Holistic Approach to Education

The Admission Awareness Campaign 2026–27 reflects the Karnataka government’s commitment to revitalizing public education, increasing enrolment, and nurturing responsible, compassionate citizens.

By investing in infrastructure, technology, teacher development, and value-based learning, the government aims to make Karnataka Public Schools a preferred choice for parents seeking affordable, high-quality education.
