With an assurance by the ruling BJP that it would talk to the Union government on giving this legal protection the Karnataka State Government unanimously passed a Bill providing a six percentage points increase in reservation for SC / STs in jobs and educational institutions, taking the overall reservation in the state past the 50 per cent ceiling imposed by the Supreme Court,

The Bill seeks to replace an ordinance that was promulgated in October

Under the Karnataka Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of seats in Educational Institutions and of Appointments or posts in the services under the State) Act, the quota for SCs will go up from 15 per cent to 17 per cent and quota for STs to go up from 3 per cent to 7 per cent. , exceeding the 50 per cent ceiling on quota by 6 per cent.

However, there are some legal hurdles to be crossed, and to tide them over, the Karnataka State Government to approach the Central Government to include a new law in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution
