The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) invites applications for the Chandrasekhar Post-Doctoral Fellowship 2025, a prestigious opportunity for early-career researchers to contribute to the field of astronomy and astrophysics. Named after the legendary astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, this fellowship offers an ideal platform for talented post-doctoral scholars to pursue independent or collaborative research under the mentorship of leading scientists at IIA.

FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

IIA offers multiple post-doctoral opportunities:

Regular Post-Doctoral Fellowships: Candidates with a Ph.D. in Physical or Mathematical Sciences, or those who have completed their thesis defense, are eligible. Applicants should have significant research overlap with IIA’s ongoing projects. The fellowship tenure is two years, extendable by one year. Age limit: preferably under 36 years.

Fellowship Amount:

  • ₹58,000/month for fresh PhDs
  • ₹61,000/month for 1–2 years of post-doc experience
  • ₹67,000/month for candidates with more experience
    Additional benefits include house rent allowance (HRA), book grant of ₹10,000/year, and medical facilities. Accommodation is provided subject to availability.

Post-Doctoral Researcher Scheme: Open to candidates who have submitted their Ph.D. thesis and await degree award or thesis defense. The fellowship duration is a maximum of one year. Age limit: preferably under 36 years.

Fellowship Amount: ₹35,000+ per month with HRA and medical support as per institute norms.

Chandrasekhar Post-Doctoral Fellowship: This premier fellowship is awarded to exceptionally bright researchers below the age of 32 years, with outstanding academic records in all areas of astronomy and astrophysics. The fellowship is for two years with the possibility of extension for one more year.

Fellowship Amount:

  • ₹75,000/month (up to 2 years of experience)
  • ₹80,000/month (more than 2 years of experience)
    Additional benefits include an annual contingency grant of ₹2,00,000, housing (subject to availability), medical support, and economy class travel reimbursement upon joining.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications are accepted three times a year with deadlines on January 31, May 31, September 30, Reviews are conducted in the first weeks of January, April, July, and October.
