In a significant boost to India’s air defence capabilities, the Indian Army (IA) successfully conducted the first of the production model firing trials of Akash Prime — the upgraded version of the Akash Weapon System. The trials were held in the strategically sensitive eastern Ladakh sector, near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), at altitudes exceeding 4,500 metres (over 15,000 feet). This achievement marks a crucial milestone in enhancing India’s high-altitude air defence readiness.
Over two days of rigorous testing, Akash Prime demonstrated its superior performance by intercepting and destroying two high-speed unmanned aerial targets. The success of these intercepts validated the missile’s capability in detecting, tracking, and neutralizing aerial threats in the harsh terrain and thin air of high-altitude environments.
The firing trials were spearheaded by the Indian Army’s Corps of Army Air Defence (AAD) in close collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Industry partners Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) also played key roles in the system’s development and testing. The involvement of these premier public sector undertakings highlights the strength of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Akash Prime is an advanced version of the original Akash surface-to-air missile system and has been specially optimized for deployment in extreme conditions. It features a more accurate guidance system and enhanced ability to engage aerial targets at higher altitudes and lower radar cross-sections, making it ideal for defending India’s mountainous borders.
The trials reinforce the Indian Army’s preparedness to counter aerial threats in high-altitude zones, a critical requirement given the current geopolitical dynamics along the northern borders. Successful deployment of Akash Prime in these regions will significantly augment India’s defensive posture and deterrence capability.
This successful trial underscores the Indian Army’s focus on modernization and indigenization of its arsenal under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. It also showcases the growing synergy between the armed forces, DRDO, and Indian defence industries in developing cutting-edge systems to meet operational challenges.
