India is set to celebrate its rich cultural legacy by hosting the first-ever International Manuscript Heritage Conference from September 11–13, 2025, in New Delhi. Themed “Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy Through Manuscript Heritage,” the historic event will be held under the banner of the newly launched Gyan Bharatam Mission (GBM) — an initiative aimed at reviving and preserving India’s ancient knowledge systems.
The conference will take place at a landmark moment, coinciding with the 132nd anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s iconic address at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago on September 11, 1893. This symbolic connection underscores the mission’s deeper purpose: to restore India’s intellectual and spiritual contributions to global awareness.
GLOBAL PARTICIPATION AND RICH PROGRAMMING
The three-day conference will bring together leading scholars, historians, archivists, and cultural custodians from across the globe. Experts will present research papers, engage in discussions, and explore the relevance of India’s manuscript heritage in the modern world.
A key highlight will be live manuscript digitisation demonstrations, showcasing advanced technologies used to preserve fragile documents. UNESCO-curated exhibitions featuring rare and ancient manuscripts from different parts of the world will offer visitors a visual journey into global textual heritage.
Attendees will also experience interactive workshops on manuscript conservation techniques, script decoding, palm-leaf restoration, and digital cataloguing. These sessions aim to build capacity among Indian institutions and youth to protect and promote manuscript treasures housed in temples, mutts, monasteries, libraries, and private collections.
GYAN BHARATAM MISSION: REVIVING INDIA’S KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS
The Gyan Bharatam Mission (GBM), launched in conjunction with the conference, is a national effort to identify, digitize, and disseminate India’s vast but scattered manuscript heritage. It seeks to bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary education and innovation, aligning with India’s vision of becoming a Vishwa Guru (global teacher).
With this initiative, India takes a significant step toward not only preserving its past but also making it accessible and relevant for future generations. The Manuscript Heritage Conference is expected to be a cornerstone in global efforts to recognize traditional knowledge systems as vital sources of intellectual and cultural wealth.
