India to Host AI Impact Summit 2026, Showcasing Global Leadership in Responsible AI

India is set to host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026, a significant step that reinforces its growing leadership in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. The summit aims to spotlight India’s commitment to democratising AI for public good, with a strong emphasis on using technology to address real-world issues in sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressing Parliament, underscored that the event aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision of deploying AI for inclusive and sustainable development. The summit will bring together international experts, policymakers, and innovators to discuss ethical, secure, and equitable AI practices.

At the heart of this effort is the IndiaAI mission, which promotes responsible AI by prioritizing safety, privacy, accountability, and bias mitigation. A key focus is the development of native Indian Language Models, created using local datasets to reflect the country’s vast linguistic diversity. Indian startups like Sarvam AI, Soket AI, Gnani AI, and Gan AI are leading the charge in building open-source foundational models that cater specifically to Indian languages and contexts.

To support this innovation ecosystem, the government is ramping up infrastructure investments, particularly in GPU-based computing to ensure affordable and scalable AI training. It is also enhancing AIKosh, the national open AI repository, which currently hosts over 1,000 datasets and 208 AI models for public and developer access.

The IndiaAI mission is already funding 30 public-interest AI projects, tackling areas such as digital health and crop forecasting. Additionally, under the IndiaAI Startups Programme, 10 Indian startups are being globally mentored at Station F and HEC Paris, two leading innovation hubs.

One of the flagship initiatives launched recently is the IndiaAI Safety Institute, designed to research and deploy tools to combat deepfakes, reduce algorithmic bias, and explore machine unlearning techniques. This complements India’s techno-legal framework, which includes the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (2023) and updated IT Rules (2021), ensuring robust regulation of AI development and deployment.

The AI Impact Summit 2026 will serve as a global platform for India to shape the future of AI, emphasizing ethical innovation, open access, and societal impact, marking a milestone in the country’s journey toward becoming a responsible AI powerhouse.
