India Shines at International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025 with Historic 7th Rank

India achieved a historic feat at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, securing the 7th rank globally among 110 participating countries. The Indian team won three gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal, achieving a national record score of 193 out of 252—India’s highest tally in the history of the IMO.

Held in July 2025, the prestigious annual competition brought together the brightest young minds from across the world. India’s remarkable performance this year is the result of a strong academic ecosystem, driven by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), which oversees the national Olympiad program in mathematics and other sciences.

The team’s preparation and performance were guided by a dedicated panel of experts, most notably Prof. Shanta Laishram, a distinguished mathematician from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi. Under his mentorship and the HBCSE’s rigorous selection and training framework, India’s young mathematicians were equipped not only with technical problem-solving skills but also with the confidence to compete at the highest international level.

The Indian delegation’s standout showing included elegant solutions to some of the most complex problems in algebra, combinatorics, number theory, and geometry. Each of the medalists demonstrated exceptional analytical ability, creativity, and precision. The three gold medalists placed among the top scorers worldwide, further showcasing India’s growing prominence in global mathematics education.

India’s continued ascent in IMO rankings is the result of sustained efforts to build a robust talent pipeline through national contests like the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) and Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO). The performance in 2025 adds to a streak of improving global ranks and demonstrates that India is not just producing world-class IT and engineering talent but also emerging as a powerhouse in pure mathematics.
